Retrospection

David Farnon

Introducing Retrospection, the new EP by David Farnon featuring “Pastourelle” and “One Day in London Town”.

Pastourelle, for Violin and Chamber Orchestra, was written in 1991. It was inspired by the island of Guernsey, in particular its beautiful South coast. Picturesque sandy bays nestling under majestic granite cliffs. Dappled, wooded valleys with crystal clear streams trickling their way down to the sea. In Summer, warm and calm, with a heady scent of gorse and pine, the clicking of grasshoppers and cries of gulls. But with the Winter storms comes a transformation, wild and exhilarating. Whistling winds and dancing spray, ominous swells in a restless sea, the waves relentlessly pounding the rocks in an awesome reminder of nature’s power.

One Day in London Town for full orchestra was written in a small bedsit in Harrow Weald during February 1981. It was to be an interesting year. Britain was seething. Mass employment amidst industrial demise and a bubbling discontent which was to explode in widespread Summer riots. Contrast this with the pageantry and splendour of the Royal wedding of Charles and Diana at St Paul’s Cathedral and the vast tapestry which is modern Britain is clear to behold. Against this backdrop, the music depicts the wonder and excitement of a recent arrival living in the metropolis. Its sights, sounds, smells, history, cultures, buzz, energy, opportunities and above all its people making it the great city it is.

Retrospection was released on 4th October 2024.
