NIGHT SONGS

Joseph phibbs

These three short settings explore different aspects of night, each inhabiting a world of childlike simplicity.
The first, a gently lilting lullaby, presents a dream-like pastoral landscape (‘The sheep are gone to the silver wood’). A fleeting song follows, drawing on the moon’s different colours, the upper voices echoing one other in a virtuosic display of vocal imitation. Ending the set is a reflective and lamenting cradle song, whose refrain ‘Sleep my pretty one, sleep’ becomes ever more impassioned, before finding a note of gentle closure.
